Introducing you to REB----------our REBEL mascot!!

Why are we reading for 20 minutes each day?

Research shows that reading ability is positively correlated with the extent to which students (everyone) read recreationally.  In other words, the more you read recreationally over the long term, the better reader your become, and reading is not only a learning experience, but it is also fun when you find something that your truly enjoy reading.

When does REBEL take place?

Rebel, our silent reading program will take place at the beginning of Block 2 in the morning, right after break.  It's an extension of Block 2.  When the music stops, everyone should be in class and ready to start reading.

What are students and staff expected to do during REBEL?

Students and staff are expected to read quietly for 20 minutes.  It's as simple as that!  Everyone is responsible for bringing something to read.

What if I forget to bring something to read?

Your teacher will have reading materials in class, but everyone is encouraged to bring a reading selection of his or her own. Check out the REBEL box.  If you have any books, magazines, etc. that you would like to donate to one of the REBEL boxes, it would be most appreciated.

What can I read?

It's up to you!  Hopefully, you will find a good novel or nonfiction book to read from the school library, the public library, or from home; however, there are no limits on the type of reading materials you can choose (within reason of course!).  You may choose to read a graphic novel, a magazine, a newspaper, or a textbook. If you have a test coming up, there's nothing wrong with reading your subject textbook.  It's that simple.

Can I do my homework during REBEL?

No, everyone, including staff, is expected to read.  Teachers won't be mnarking---they will be reading like you!

Can I talk during REBEL?

No, REBEL is 20 minutes of sustained silent reading.  Most people require a quiet environment to read.

What if I arrive late to REBEL?
Go to class.  Enter quietly.  Explain your reason for being late after the announcements.

What if I have problems finding something to read?

See Mr. Chafer in the school library for ideas.  He will help you locate reading materials of interest to you.  Ask your teacher or your peers what might be interesting to read.  Check out books as well from the public library, or find something interesting to read from home.  Check out what books are in the Book Exchange outside the library.
